“The Art and Style of Jazz” Presented by Brian Coyle (Professor of Jazz Studies and Music Department Chair) It is America’s great artistic offering to the world of music, yet many people find it bewildering. In just one hour we will deconstruct this great music and demystify it forever. We’ll listen to and discuss Improvisation, Swing, Group Interaction, and more. By the end you will want to travel to New York City and hang out at the Village Vanguard until the wee small hours of the morning.
“Microbial Hitchhikers and the Human Genome: How Much of You is You?” Presented by Aaron Best (Professor of Biology) Rapid advances in DNA sequencing technologies are allowing scientists to decode the genomes of individual humans, revealing insights into how we work and how we vary. Our definition of the human genome is expanding to include the myriad contributions made by the microbial organisms living in all of us. This session will explore these changes and highlight research efforts of students and faculty at Hope to understand microbes through analyses of genome sequences.
Perception and Psychoacoustics Presented by Sonja Trent Brown (Professor of Psychology) Have you ever listened to a person you don’t know over the phone? Did you somehow get a mental picture of that person? What information in the voice does the brain use to help us create the image of the speaker? How accurate are we in making these perceptual decisions? Do the acoustic cues vary systematically with respect to age, gender, and ethnicity? This session explores these questions.
