Joel Schoon-Tanis ‘89 is an artist whose creativity has found expression and acclaim in painting, children’s books, television and music. Graduating from Hope as a studio art major, his painting explores creation from a whimsical, child-like perspective. His work can be found around the U.S. and abroad in many schools, children’s hospitals and churches. He has contributed to more than half a dozen books for children and was the creator and writer of “Come On Over!,” an award-winning children’s television program filmed at Hope.

Meritorious Service Award
Dr. James Boelkins ‘66 was provost and a professor of biology at Hope from 2002 until retiring in 2010. He worked in higher education administration for 39 years and valued the opportunity to play a role in strengthening the mission of the college, recruiting more than 80 outstanding faculty, helping to create the Center for Faithful Leadership, participating in the design of new and renovated facilities, and the restoration of the Skinner organ. He has emphasized building even closer ties between the academic, campus ministries and student life programs to create a more holistic student experience.
